World War II

Introduction. My project is on World War II. I chose World War II because three of my family members faught in world war II. My grandfather was stationed at Pearl Harbor the day it was bombed by Japan. My other grandfather and my uncle aslo faught in World War II.


World War II began on September 1, 1939, When Adolf Hitler led Nazi forces into Poland with out a declaration of war. On September 3,1939, Great Britain and France as well as Australia, and New Zeland ( The Allied powers.) declared war on Nazi Germany. Canada declares war on Nazi Germany on September 10, 1939. It did not take long for Nazi forces to concur Poland. After Poland, Nazi forces marched into France. France fell to the axis powers in June of 1940. The axis powers ( Nazi Germany, Italy, and Japan.) then conquerd the rest of Europe. Only Great Britain was left.

On December 7, 1941, Japanese bombers launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Many battle ships were sunk and 2403 military personnel and civilians were killed. 1,100 military personnel were killed on board the USS Arizona. On December 9, 1941, the U.S. officially became part of the war by declaring war on Japan. Japan was quickly conquering the Pacific. The turning point in the war with Japan was in June of 1942, at the battle of Midway. This battle was faught using fighter planes that were launched off of aircraft carriers in the middle of the ocean. The U.S. won the battle of Midway and took back the pacific. On June 6, 1944, known as D-Day, U.S. general Dwight Eisenhower moved U.S. and allied forces in to Normandy, France. They faught through France into Germany, and on May 7,1945, the U.S. and allied forces excepted Nazi Germanys unconditional surrender. Now there was only Japan. President Truman decided it was best to end the war quickly, so on August 6, 1945 the U.S. dropped an atom bomb on Hiroshima. Three days later on August 9, 1945, the U.S. dropped another bomb on Nagasaki. Japan finally surrendered on September 2, 1945, ending the war.

World War II was important because it gained the U.S. a greater respect as a leading nation. The U.S. created and tested new forms of aircraft, battle ships, bombs and other weponry. We now know how powerful and destructive the atiomic bomb is. It helped us alot in technological advanceses.

Blooms Taxomony. I did not know Midway was the turning point in the war with Japan. I did not know the U.S. droped two atom bombs on Japan. This topic is important because it is one of the biggest wars in history. This topic is really interesting because there was alot of unexpected turn arounds, mostly for the better. A significant element was Pearl Harbor, many lives were lost when the battle ships burst into flames. Another significant element was the battle of Midway when the U.S. won the battle in the air by destroying hundreds of Japanese planes. This topic is important in history. It is important in history because it was a mojor all out world war. World War II is significant in history because it advanced the U.S. tecnologicaly and it anvanced our country into a great world power.

The battle of Midway was a major turning point in the war.

Aircraft carriers were used at Midway to launch fighter planes.

On D-Day ( June 6,1944 ) U.S. troops invaded Normandy and fought their way into Germany.

Nazi Germany surrenders on May 7, 1945.

On August 9, 1945, The U.S. dropped an atom bomb on Nagasaki.

Japan surrenders on September 2, 1945.
